Electronic Portable Air Conditioner

Does anyone have any knowledge about portable air conditioners?

I am thinking about purchasing two portable air conditioners. My condominium is 960 square feet, so each level is about 415 square foot. This is minus the stair case. I would like one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. I would like to eventually do away with central a/c. I live in Mesa, Az. where temperatures in the summer can reach 112 and higher. Does anyone have any experience with portable a/c's? The cost, the reliability, any information will help. Also, as far as the operating cost on the electric bill. Central air is very expensive and can run over $200/mos if not more in Az.

1. portables can cost more to run..esp in hotter climates.
2. Portable A/C units are not as efficient as central a/c units are. If you are paying that much just to run your a/c you must have an older model. They make better ones today. I just had an 18 Seer unit installed in my home and it has cut my electric bill down about $50 per month. Talk to a local HVAC company and see what they recommend. They usually do free estimates and can answer your questions a little better.
