- I've never owned one, so I don't know if they are a good deal or not, but they seem to be pretty popular right now. The hot air is vented through a hose very similar to a clothes dryer's that goes out a window. I think most of them come with a plastic window kit. Here are some pictures: http://www.air-n-water.com/faq_venting.htm
- If you are referring to the larger units on wheels that sit inside a room, they should be near a window. They will normally come with a vent kit that will allow you to open a window and place a vent adapter in the window. The hot air will be sent outside. These units are very good at cooling large areas. yes, they are more expensive, but they are worth it. Oh, but sure to let it stand in a tray because the condensation will need somewhere to go and a tray about 1" deep will be fine.
- I have had one for about 7 years now and find it very good. You do have to vent it outside either by using a vent hose through the window or putting a vent hole through the wall. The vent hose is similar to tumble dryer vent hoses. I have a vent going through my wall which is tidy way of doing it but sometimes I do vent it through a window if I move to another room. The moisture generated can either be emptied from the on board tank or you can use a drain hose if you are setting it up in the same position.(the drain hose would have to go out to a drain or through the wall ) Down side. a bit noisy when running and hose through the window is a bit messy.
- OMG don't do it!!! I ordered from Costco a portable air conditioner, with tax and delivery it was almost $500 I have included the link http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11206378&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1 what appealed to me was the "no water tank to empty" what this turned out to mean is that there is a little hole in the bottom of the unit at the back that you pull the plug to drain the water... now where i live humidity is usually around 60% but i was having to drain this thing every 2-3 hours... which was no easy task as the drain plug was 2 fingers from the floor at the back so every time had to spin the unit, and finding something low enough to catch the water was impossible... I contacted the manufacturer after ignoring my emails for a week finally got someone on the phone... who offer two solutions... 1. drill a hole in my wall to allow the drain to exit directly outside. 2. elevate the unit so that a catch pan would fit underneath... BOTH ASSININE suggestions... if i have to drill a hole how is it portable... hmmm drill little holes throughout my house? and two the unit weights over 80lbs so elevating it - again doesnt make it portable... thankfully Costco has a great return policy... so my recommendation for the money get traditional window unit... or like i am going to do... save the money and install central air.
- Most window A/C units recirculate the same air a few might import a small amount of fresh air. The warm air you feel at the back of the unit is air passing through the condenser to cool down the freon. The truly portable unit must have provisions via some type of duct or large hose out a window. discharging it in the room would be counter productive. Worth the price?? I rather have an attached unit, two if needed.
