How do portable air conditioners drain?
Public Comments
- Some window conditioners drain into the built in "pan", & the fan picks up the moisture & uses it to cool the coil. Some have a drain tube, & need a place to drain without damaging the woodworks.
- I'm pretty sure the portable type has an evaporator fan that dries up the moisture as it runs...just like a refrigerator. This is if you are talking about a true "portable" a/c...the type you can set anywhere like floor, table,etc...if you are talking about a window unit then these other folks are correct.
- Make sure that there is a little slant downward, as I have seen them not drain correctly and the moisture rots the window sill.
- The portable air conditioner has a drip tube. I use a small sump pump with a built in tank to have the water pumped outside through a small hole I drilled in the window plate where the condenser air blows outside. I bought the condensate pump from e-bay for about $25.00
- They have evaporator pan plus they also have a drip hole drain on the back at the bottom which you need to check on occasion because they do clog up.
