Electronic Portable Air Conditioner

Can you mount an air conditioner and still be able to open the window? Don't want portable-too expensive/messy

I want to install a regular window air conditioner in my window. I want to be able to open it on the days when it is not too hot so I can get some addition fresh air in the room. I have only two windows in the bedroom, and when it gets really hot, I need the A/C. Portables don't seem to be the answer and they are expensive for what I need it for - only occasional air conditioning. I saw an a/c once a long time ago with some type of bar that was put in the window that the a/c was attached to and you could open the window, but my super never heard of this. Any ideas? Thanks

  2. Are your windows the type where the top pane comes down? If you are able to do that, you don't need any special hardware, just lower the top pane of the window (you may need a handle on the top to do this). Get your super to see if that is possible. If it is, you should be able to open the top pane about 4-5 inches getting a good breeze, also reducing the heat in your apartment, cooling it on the cool days better. I have really high celings in my apartment (8 feet and 10 feet) and this works great. Call you super and ask.
