Are silent portable air conditioning units available? My AC unit sounds like a mustang engine.?

1. If you keep the AC unit (the big one) outside, it reduces the noise. Most of the modern ACs have silent "inside parts" and loud "outside parts".
2. portable ac units are available but.. they are not really very portable. you still need to run an exhaust tube and a drain line to the nearest window.. it portability is very limited to within a few feet of the exhaust window.. plus they tend to be more expensive than a window ac.. if your looking for a silent ac and its mainly for one room.. then your best bet is a mini split.. they cost is about the same as a portable except that installation can be expensive unless you do it yourself.. these mini splits are extremely quiet because the compressor,the loud part), for the unit is located outside from 10 to 50 feet away from the evaporator, the quiet part inside the room.
3. Compressor + blower = noise! Around here we call them "window shakers"
4. check the barrings in the ac unit before you spend more money than you have to.
