Why does a window air conditioner drip inside the house instead the outside? Our fairly new room air conditioner (window mounted) is dripping water from the front of the unit (inside the room) instead of dripping outdoors. Unit is mounted leaning inward instead of outward because of the type of window it's mounted in --- unable to fix it so that it leans toward the outside. Do I need to make it lean outside to fix the problem?
When I turn on my air conditioner window unit, it just hums; what is the problem? Sunday morning my 3 year old granddaughter was over at my house. I was in the other room and I heard her turning the window unit off and on and off and on and high and low and off and on. I kept yelling for her to stop it and she finally did. That evening I got home and turned on the window air conditioner and it just makes a loud humming noise. It will not work any more. Is there a reset button or something? What is the problem? She just flipped it on and off a lot. This is a 220 volt unit. Of course it is very heavy. When I turn on the window unit it hums for about 3 seconds then it stops humming. Nothing else happens, including no air is blowing out in those 3 seconds. I have checked the voltage in the wall outlet and it reads 220 volts. I reached in and spined the blower, and it spins very easily, not stuck at all. (I spun the blower by hand when it was unpluged) It has not yet spun on its own sense my granddaughter destroyed it.
Does a window mount air conditioner need to be mounted in a window? I would like to use a window air conditioner to cool my cellar. My cellar doesn't have a window. I would place the unit on a table and run a drain hose to the floor drain. Will the unit work properly with the back side of the unit inside the room, not in the fresh outside air?
How to install a window air conditioner in a window that slides side to side.? I am going to need a window air conditioner this year. But the new apartments I am living in have windows that slide side to side, not up and down. My question is, how do I install a window air conditioner in this kind of window? It was so much easier in my last apartments because I could just pull the window down on it and slide out the attachments and me done.
How can use a horizontal window air conditioner on a Slider Window? How can use a horizontal window air conditioner on a Slider Window? The Room's Window is on the front side of the House (East) so it has to look pretty. We don't have stores selling Casement A/c so Casement Air conditioner is not an option... I live in Hawaii so Online stores is also not an option.

Can my window air conditioner get wet? I bought a Goldstar window air conditioner (5000 BTU). Does it need some sort of cover to protect it from the rain? Or is it ok if it gets rained on? Because I have seen window air conditioners with covers on them before, so I don't really know and it doesn't say anything in the instructions.
How to winterize a window air conditioner? Whats the best way to winterize a window air conditioner? Also what is the purpose of winterizing? Is it to keep cold air out? Or does it protect the air conditioner itself? Thanks for the info.
What is the best way to circulate air from a window air conditioner to multiple rooms in the house? I have a window air conditioner (8000btu) which does a great job of cooling my living room, unfortunately, the cooler air stays in just the living room, so the bedroom is still hot. I have 2 fans to help move the air. I also have a ceiling fan in the bedroom, but, it seems the bedroom is always FAR warmer than the living room. I'm wondering the best way to position the fans to get maximum cooling effect in the bedroom. The living room is essentially a square -- on one side of the square - in the middle - is the window with the AC.. oppisite the AC is the hallway which leads to the bedroom. Would I be better off putting a fan at the entrance to the hallway blowing the air out of the living room, and down the hallway? or put it in the center of the living room, and blow the air towards the hallway? Or should I blow the hot air out of the bedroom, to the livingroom? Should I put the fans up high? or close to the ground? Should I turn off the ceiling fan in the bedroom? Thanks.
How can I reduce the outside noise coming in from around a window air conditioner? I have a very quiet window air conditioner. It does not make much noise when it's running. That's not the issue. The issue is that the window is essentially open while the air conditioner is installed. The air conditioner has plastic accordion flaps that stretch across the window, but they don't block outside street noise. Is there anything I can do to block the outside noise from coming in to my home from the space around the window air conditioner?
Mold is growing on the wall under my window air conditioner. Why and what should I do? We usually run the window air conditioner only at night. After we were gone for an especially humid weekend (and thus obviously not using the air conditioner), we came home and noticed that the inside wall underneath the air conditioner is bubbling out and growing orangish-colored mold. I don't know if it was there before the weekend or not. I'm wondering if the air conditioner could be causing the mold or if it's another problem with the window or maybe even the crawl space in our basement that's kind of below that spot. What should I do?
What makes a window air conditioner freeze over? I have a window air conditioner, and it keep freezing over. Its not cooling well, at all, there seems to be little air coming out of it. I have tried washing it out. I have cleaned the filter. I keep having to turn it off every 45 minutes or so for about 20 minutes to thaw. The humidity here is high, does that have any effect on it? My landlord has been here yet to look at it.
Can you make a window air-conditioner into a free standing unit? Here's our dilemma: We just moved into a new house, and the windows are all the crank-angled kind (I don't know the technical term), so window AC units don't work. Instead of buying a brand new one (which we did last year, before we moved)... Can you rig a window unit to work as a free standing air conditioner?
How do you clean a window air conditioner? I bought a new window air conditioner 5 years ago, and aside from installing and removing it every year, I haven't touched it. What should I be doing to keep it running efficiently and extend its life? thats easy for this girl to do?
How do you install a window air conditioner in non-standard windows or in locations other than a window? I own a condo and want to install a window air conditioner. Problem is I don't have standard windows. And I've heard from numerous people that a window ac is much more effective and cheaper than a portable unit. I do have a sliding glass door. Anyone have any success in installing a window ac in a sliding glass door? The ac unit will prevent the door from fully closing and there would be a gap left at the top from the unclosed sliding door. How would you seal this gap? Also, another thought was using the window ac in the bedroom door way and dispensing the heat into the hallway. But then would have to find a way to seal the whole doorway and cutting a portion out of this seal to fit the ac. Or any other methods you might recommend to installing a "window" ac unit in locations other than a window.
what do I do about my window air conditioner? My boyfriend recently bought an older model window air conditioner from his boss's mother who passed. It works wonders, cools the room, but when we take it out of the window, there is a pool of water that settles and pours out on the floor. Is this normal? I cant constantly leave it in the window because it fits funny (not dangerously, just funny) but also, the pool of water is bothering me. When it's putting out air, is it dripping to the outside? is that how it works? is there a drain thing at the bottom for it to pour out ever so I can limit the puddling on the floor? Thank you!
What will happened if I place a window air conditioner to vent to another room not direct outside? The other room is pretty small, and the air conditioner is 24000 BTU after 5 minutes the small room where the hot air goes gets sooo much hotter, even I have placed a fan to get the hot air out from the window of the small room, it doesnt help, would this in any way stop the air conditioner to work more efficiently? Because it is blowing pretty strong and I can see it brings some water with it to the cooling room. THANKS
How do I extend my side curtains on my window air conditioner? Let me elaborate, I bought a window air conditioner that only extends a total of 3 ft. ( the width of the unit and the side curtains) I have a 5 ft. window opening , what could I use to make up the foot on each side of the air conditioner. Do they sell kits out there that could make up that difference? If so where? If not any ideas?

How can get rid of a squirrel that is camping out on my window sill under my Air Conditioner? On the top floor of my home, I have a window air conditioner. A few months ago when the weather turned cold, I noticed a squirrel began hanging around, but that was about it. Now he literally has collected tons of twigs, paper, tissues, and other junk which covers the entire space underneath my air conditioner on the window sill. He has also began to leave little black droppings on TOP of the air conditioner(what nerve huh?) and around that twiggy nest thingy. Each time I pull back the curtains to make noises and run him off, he sits there looking at me, or comes up to the window as if he expects me to feed him or something which I've NEVER done. If I slide back my window screen and physically remove and clean the area, will the squirrel attack if he sees me? What can I do to get rid of it? It's really starting to get on my nerve, and my window sill looks disgusting. Thanks
Air Conditioner installation in window which opens side to side? Hello all: I would like to install a window air conditioner in a window which opens side to side ( rather than top to bottom), so window portion on top of air conditioner would be open. Is there some kind of plastic or something I could use to block out this portion of the window so I can install the air conditioner? I'm hot - I'd like to have at least one cool room! Any answers would be appreciated! Thanks very much, all!
How do I fix my Amana window air conditioner? i have a buddy that has an Amana window air conditioner. i think its a 50,000 btu. its brand new. he says that it will only get down to 78 degrees and wont cool any lower than that. its got a digital thermo on it. i told him to drill a couple holes in the bottom of the unit to get all of the water that was trapped in the bottom of it out and he did but it still wont cool past 78. what do you think is the possible cause of this?
How do I, if at all, rig up a window air conditioner to work in an attic? Recently thought I was a genius and installed a 15000 BTU 15amp 115 volt window air conditioner in my new 2nd story additon with the rear of the unit hanging into the attic. All is well and good with the unit when the air temp is moderately high, but these past few days with the temp in the attic peaking around 130 degrees, have been causing the unit to trip the 15 amp circuit breaker. I have an attic ventilation fan that I could use (via duct work) to blow outside air directly on the back of the AC unit, or to suck air directly from the back of the unit. I could also increase the ampreage of the circuit breaker, but am not sure if 14 gauge wire can handle anything above 15amps. Another option would be to run a thicker gauge wire to accomodate a larger circuit breaker, but I feel that is not adressing the real problem of the cool air ventilation to the AC unit. Anyone have any suggestions?
What do i need to do to put a small window air conditioner in a wall slot? I have a in the wall slot for my A/C. The a/c in the slot is 24 inches wide, 20inches deep & 14.5 inches high..l i want to buy a window a/c for this slot but most window air conditioners are not that wide or deep. i want to put a window air conditioner in? i'm renting a room in a house, and my room seems to be the furthest from the central air conditioner so it barely gets any AC, and i live in tampa florida. I talked to my landlord about installing a window AC, and it's ok with him. so what do i do? if i went and bought a window AC unit from home depot do i just put it in the window? what kind of work on my part is involved with this kind of thing? Also, what brand should i be looking for? my price range is $200 max. Also, my window is an up-and-down sliding window
Why does my window air conditioner shut itself off after 5 mins and trips the power outlet? The window air conditioner was in my ex's house and was moved to my home. Upon plugging it in I realized the plug looked burnt on the prong. So I replaced the plug thinking his outlet wasn't the right amperage? so it burnt it. I plug it into a power outlet bar and it will run for about 5 minutes then trips that power bar. What is going on in the air conditioner? Is it something I can fix myself?
why does water condense on the bottom of my window air conditioner? water condenses on the bottom of my window air conditioner, and drips inside the house. this water is not the water inside the unit that is supposed to go out the back. it is forming on the outside bottom of the air conditioner. all the water that is supposed to go out the back is going out the back.

Can you inject coolant into a window air conditioner? Mine is a cheap Hampton Bay 5,000 BTU window air conditioner. On a hot day, even if I turn it off for ONE second, it feels hot immediately. Anyways, I set it at 68 F, and notice that after an hour or two, it automatically goes up to 72 degrees and is not that cold anymore. Can I inject coolant? I'm not too handy with these things. Are there other easier options or should I get a new one?
Is there such a thing as a window air conditioner for HORIZONTAL windows? We bought an air conditioner that fits in the window today and when we went to mount it realized it is for the tall vertical windows. We have a window that slides horizontally. Is there such a thing as a window air conditioner for HORIZONTAL windows? Or if not, is there a converter kit? Thanks! A vertical window is one that slides UP to open. My horizontal window slides side to side to open and close. Turning an AC on its side will cause big time damage...(but thanks for trying to help).
How cost effective is a 5,000 BTU window air conditioner for a small bedroom? I want to cool off a small bedroom. The home has central air but thermostat is set higher than I'd like. I want to cool my western-facing bedroom more that what the thermostat is set at and not sure which way to go. A tower fan or small 5,000 BTU window air conditioner. If I get the tower fan, I'd have to change the thermostat from 78 degrees to 74 degrees. If I get a widnow unit, I can keep the central air thermostat at 78 and just cool my room off. Which is more cost effective?
Why do coils freeze on a window air conditioner? Our window air conditioner doesn't blow air hard enough to cool the room and when I opened the front, the coils and the compressor was frosted. I turned it off and it defrosted and worked better, but then froze again. Any ideas of what to do so I don't have to buy a new one?
how to convert a vertical window air conditioner to a horizontal window? i bought a air conditioner for a window that slides up an down. But , my window slides fron side to side. I need some ideas to make this work. I bought a bracket to mount the conditioner on ,but I need something to hold it in from the top. The window needs to be able to be used if I dont want to use the air con. I am going to make a screen that goes on top of the unit, an then put some plexie glass inside the window frame, when using the unit. So the question is how do I support the unit from side to side an the top. Thanks for any input
Installing a window air conditioner? I want to install a window air conditioner in all the bedrooms, but all the windows in my house slide from left to right. That means I'd have to find something to fill in the big open space above the air conditioner without making it look tacky. Is this project going to cost me alot just because my windows don't slide up and down? I have 3 bedrooms. I had a consultation yesterday, and the guy wanted $4,500 for central a/c. I thought it would be cheaper to install window air conditioners. I need to figure something out fast. Lately, the temp. in my house has been outrageous. It was 95 degrees around 4pm yesterday!
How can I repair dented or bent cooling fins on the rear (Outdoor) side of a window air conditioner? While assembling a newly-purchased window air conditioner, a small object (A friend's toe) accidentally impacted against the back of the unit (The end that sticks outside and exhausts the hot air), bending the tiny and exceedingly fragile cooling fins, creating a circular dent approximately two inches in diameter. The tubing within is not bent or dented, just the fins, and the whole dent is at most 1/8" deep. Is there a way to straighten these fins back to normal? I realize it is impossible to make them appear perfect like they did when it was brought home from the store, but at least enough to allow air to flow between them again. Perhaps a fine-tooth plastic comb or something similar would work?
