Can a window unit air conditioner be placed and used indoors? My husband and I inherited a large window unit air conditioner from a relative who recently passed away. Unfortunately, it is too big to be able to place on the only window we have in our apartment, and unfortunately the apartment doesn't have air conditioning, only heating. Is there a way to still be able to use the unit, placing it somewhere indoors? This is something totally new to both of us, and don't know what to do.
Can a window unit air conditioner be put in a window sideways? We have a swamp cooler style small window air conditioning unit that is supposed to sit horizontally in the window, but we have windows that open left to right instead of up and down. Can we put the unit in the window sideways? Someone told me it might not work and could mess up the freon? Please help me figure it out, because it's really hot!
How do you replace a control board on a window unit air conditioner? Took my window unit air conditioner, Kenmore model # 580.76129300, to sears repair shop. They said it was a bad control board. What is the control board and where can I buy one, so I can try to fix it myself? They told me it would cost $280.00 to fix it for me. Could buy a new one for that!
When I turn on my air conditioner window unit, it just hums; what is the problem? Sunday morning my 3 year old granddaughter was over at my house. I was in the other room and I heard her turning the window unit off and on and off and on and high and low and off and on. I kept yelling for her to stop it and she finally did. That evening I got home and turned on the window air conditioner and it just makes a loud humming noise. It will not work any more. Is there a reset button or something? What is the problem? She just flipped it on and off a lot. This is a 220 volt unit. Of course it is very heavy. When I turn on the window unit it hums for about 3 seconds then it stops humming. Nothing else happens, including no air is blowing out in those 3 seconds. I have checked the voltage in the wall outlet and it reads 220 volts. I reached in and spined the blower, and it spins very easily, not stuck at all. (I spun the blower by hand when it was unpluged) It has not yet spun on its own sense my granddaughter destroyed it.
Why does my apartment window unit air conditioner work half the time? Just moved into my new apartment and it has an older window-unit A/C. For the first day, it didn't seem like it was blowing cold air at all and the apartment was hot. The next day it works perfectly fine and blows nice cool air and I get the apartment down to 74*. Now its back to blowing normal air again and I'm back in an 86* apartment. Is there a solution to this or should I call the landlord to have it fixed?
Who do I do if my window unit air conditioner is causing the electrical plug and extension cord to overheat? We have a large, vertical window-type air conditioner which keeps shorting out because the electrical plug prong is heating up and causing the head of the plug to be VERY hot and is making the extension cord overheat. Help! I forgot to mention that my air conditioner's plug was overheating BEFORE I connected the plug to the extension cord. So, it seems something is wrong with the prongs/plug itself since one prong is burning a tiny, tiny bit or else the conditioner itself is pulling a bunch of juice for some reason.
My new window air conditioner unit has no visible condensate outside. Should I worry? I installed a window unit to supplement my central AC which does not work well in the bedroom. The window AC did not come with a tube, nor can I see anything in the owner's manual about emptying anything. I know that condensation forms and must go somewhere, but there is no puddle on the sidewalk, nor is it running down the outside of my house. Where is it going??
What is the best window unit air conditioner? Hello, I recently recovered from buying a complete lemon of a window unit, and I'm looking to buy another one. The big thing for me is how cool it will get my room. I have a mid-sized room--and I like it cold. Sleeping temperatures, I like it about 65. It's very important that the window unit actually keeps my room cold, and while that seems obvious, my last window unit was absolutely horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions for brands and models? The one I'm getting rid of is a Samsung, and I probably won't ever buy an AC from them again.
Window Air Conditioner Unit: fix or replace? We bought our window unit slightly used when we first got married, almost 4 years ago. It's only 5-6 years old. When we started using it this spring, it was leaking water after a few hours of running, which didn't worry us too much. Then, two nights ago, the room was overly warm when we woke up, and the unit was blowing room-temp air. It worked fine again last night, until I woke up to some horrible sounds, almost like cracking sounds, and when I got to the unit, it was barely blowing at all (even though it was on high), but the air was somewhat cool. Now to the question... it is definitely not worth calling a repairman over, but is there something we could take a look at in the unit or do we just need to trash it?
How many watts does a 5,000 BTU 120V window unit air conditioner pull? My air conditioner in my car isn't working. I plan to get it fixed latter on, but for now, I have an AC inverter that can handle about 300 watts and 120 volts and I think I can come up with something to catch the water. So would it work or would the fan just come on and the compressor hum and blow the inverter?
question about window unit air conditioner cleaning.? i have an ac unit that has been stored in a dusty barn and is covered in dust. it is the type that you put the outside frame in the window and slide AC in from the inside. what is the best way to clean it up for use. any cleaning tips or do`s and dont`s?
Cost to run a window unit air conditioner.? I've heard that it costs less energy to run a window unit air conditioner all the time, rather than turning it on and off only when you are in the room or actually using it (at night when you're sleeping in there and turning it off in the morning, then maybe turning it back on while watching tv in there, and then off when you leave the room). Is it really true that turning it on and off a few times a day will cost more money than leaving it on for an extended period of time?
Window unit air conditioner making sputtering noise? I have a Frigidare window unit that was new last year. It has been working great until yesterday when it started making sputtering noises. These sputtering noises occur no matter what cooling or fan setting I put it on. Additional info: There's road construction and new subdivision construction going on directly around my home so the air outside is always dusty to say the least. We also had heavy rains yesterday. I don't know if that makes a difference, but the sputtering noise started around the time the rain stopped. Any input would be appreciated. I'm hoping there's something I can do so I don't have to bug my poor landlord! Thanks!
Should my Simplicity Window Unit Air conditioner be dripping or not? I bought a 5200 BTU Simplicity A/C(by danby) from Canadian tire. For the first 3 days it worked fine and it dripped a LOT. Then it began to make this sputtering noise, and stopped dripping. When I looked inside there was tons of water, but it was no longer dripping. The noise is loud, sputtering, rattling and the other people in my building are not amused. I've read other threads that say yes it should drip, others that say no it should not because it keeps the unit cool.I cannot see how this is possible because its so loud. We took the unit out of the window and tilted it really far back, and it SPILLED water from where the fins are. But its impossible to tilt the unit that much in the window. There are no other significant drain holes that I see. Please let me know your thoughts. Its 45 with the humidex here today, help!
Can a cat become ill from drinking the water that drains from a window air-conditioner unit? With the heat wave being what its been, my air-conditioner has been running for days and I have caught a couple of my cats lapping at the water coming from the unit when they're out on the roof (its a flat top "deck"). I have to say it concerns me somewhat as I don't know what's in the water. The cats have all access to the house and their own fresh cold water supply. I was just worried about the water from the unit.
My window unit air conditioner doesnt work on Cool....? I Have a 10,000 BTU Haier Window air conditioner and when i run it on high fan it works fine but once i switch it to High or low cool The whole system shuts off and even my fuse switch..what ever that box with switches on my wall is called...does any one know what can be the problem??? i tried switching outlet's but still doesn't work =[ I only had this AC for a year....
Can you make a window air-conditioner into a free standing unit? Here's our dilemma: We just moved into a new house, and the windows are all the crank-angled kind (I don't know the technical term), so window AC units don't work. Instead of buying a brand new one (which we did last year, before we moved)... Can you rig a window unit to work as a free standing air conditioner?
How can I encase a window unit air conditioner for use as a portable or freestanding unit? I have my eye on a 115v 10,000 btu unit which is affordable (actual portables are not). I have windows in this apartment which do not allow for actual mounting. I am thinking of a styrofoam/ plywood case but i'm not sure about safety and condensation drip. I have been unsuccessful in locating plans online. I am only trying to cool a bedroom. The unit I want will suffice, I just want to insulate against heat and noise as much as possible (withouth the drip ruining the case). The window unit is a LG Electronics 10,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote Model LWHD1006R. I'm not intimidated by the project, I just want to make sure I have all the bases covered. I wiss use it approximately 2 months and want it window mountable in the future. Thanks.
"Deflector" for window model air conditioner unit? I have a window air conditioner in my new apartment that seems to aim straight into the wall and ceiling and not cool the room. I rigged some cardboard on the top and side to try to point the air flow more towards the room, and that seemed to work temporarily, but the cardboard/duct tape mass eventually sagged and ended up blocking the unit entirely. Home Depot recommended buying shower stall liner (light, thin plastic) and putting it up in the same way (cost $30-50). I'd rather get the plastic material itself or something more "permanent" that wouldn't make the room seem as ridiculous. Does a specific product for this project exist? What is the viable alternative? Where do I buy it?
My window unit air conditioner makes "crackling" noises...? I have a small window unit air conditioner in my bedroom and it recently began making "crackling" noises throughout the night. It will be quiet for an extended period of time, then the crackling noises will start and continue off and on for the rest of the night. I cleaned the filter which seemed to help the first time, but the noises have begun again. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?
window unit air conditioner freezeing problem? i bought an air conditioner for my bed room less than a year ago and it worked fine for the first few months. but now if i leave it running for an hour or so a thick sheet of ice forms on the front coils right behind the filter. the filter is completely clean, no dust stuck on it or anything. the room is large and the air conditioner has enough btu's to cool the room. does anyone know what might be wrong with it and if it is fixable?

Does a "wall unit" air conditioner have to be installed as a window unit? I've been looking for a room sized air conditioner, but do not want a window unit. Home Depot's website has wall units, but it doesn't explain how they are installed. The room in question is on the third level of the house, with dormer windows, and the main a/c unit just doesn't keep it cool enough. Does anyone know something about these units?
Will a non-dedicated circuit affect the effeciency of an air conditioner window unit? I have purchased a new 30,000 btu a/c window unit. And yes, this is the proper size for the room. I understand that it should be on a dedicated circuit but I havent gotten around to getting one installed. At this point the unit is plugged in but shares the circuit with some plugs that are not in use. At any rate, when the a/c is running (fan only or cool) our meter spins out of control and our bill went up about $200 the first month of having it installed. Is this a/c faulty or is it the circuit. By the way, my neighbor who has an old unit pays about $65 max during the summer. Thanks for the input in advance! 30,000-35,000...whatever, it was a round about figure....everyone else knew what I meant.
window air conditioner fitting in wide window? I have a 48" wide window in which I wish to install a window unit air conditioner. Every unit I've seen in stores fits maybe a 38" wide window. I've asked a couple manufacturers if they make extension kits to make them fit, and answer is no. What can I use to fill in the gap?
window air conditioner unit? the blower fan stopped turning. My husband took unit out and put 3 and 1 oil in the oil plugs on it and put caps back on.
