Air Conditioners Knowledge Base
Air Conditioners? I have bought air conditioners to go in the bedrooms of a house I just purchased. On the home inspection it states that we have 120 VAC Branch Circuts, and 240 VAC Branch Circuts and the main breaker size is 100 AMPS... I have installed (2) 5200 BTU window air conditioners and am wondering if it is using too much power? I plan to get another 5200 to go in another room later on.
air conditioners? We live in a mobile home with slider windows, not windows that go up and down. Do they make air conditioners that are meant for this style of windows? I hope so, as trailers can get beastly hot in the summer! If so, where would I find this style in the US?

How does the window air conditioners work? I was wondering about those window air conditioners. Do they cool outside air and then bring it in the room or do they just suck up the air in the room and cool it and eject it back into the room. Or is it something completely different.
How do air conditioners produce so much water? I have one of those large single-room air conditioners because my air conditioner system just doesn't cut it, and it's linked to the outside by a hose, so I have to empty the water when it gets full. How does it manage to produce about 5 pounds of water in just a few hours? Thanks for your answers!
How do stand up air conditioners work? From what I understand about air conditioners/refrigeration units (including refrigerators/freezers) is they all exhaust heat someplace. So where do stand up AC exhaust there heat to, or do they not exhaust heat? And if they don't exhaust heat then how do they produce cold air?
Anyone using air conditioners instead of their central air to save money? Is this really more efficient with the cost of electric going up? I know the new air conditioners are energy star certified. Just needed some opinions. We don't need to cool the whole house, just a few rooms, and with a baby we don't want the whole house chilly. We just mainly need the downstairs a bit cool and our bedroom. Anyone doing this instead of running their central air for the whole house?
Do window air conditioners have to have contact with the outside? Do window installation air conditioners have to have access to the outside? In other words, could I set one on a table and have it operate normally? I ask because I saw some "portable" air conditioners that do not need outside air, but are pretty expensive. I would like to get a cheap window one if it will work. Thanks. An early thanks for the answers recieved. I hadn't heard of airconditioners that don't mount in a wall or window either, until I went to BestBuy yesterday. They must be new. I guess I can live with spending a little extra. Thanks again.
How well do window air conditioners work? How well do the air conditioners that you put in your window work? Do they get the room really cold, or just a little cold? Are they worth getting? My room is 165 sq ft.
How does the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment affect a person's hearing? For a physics assignment I need to describe how the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment can have a detrimental affect on ones hearing. Low frequencies and low intensity vibrations affect a person psychologically, but insofar I can find no evidence to suggest that due to a particularly low frequency a person's hearing would be affected. If anyone has any information that would be greatly appreciated.
Do air conditioners take up more money the lower the temperature? Hi, everyone. I want to know for a fact, do air conditioners take up more money the lower you put the temperature? Or could I put the temperature at any number i want and still have to pay a steady amount? Please, don't just guess, I want to know for a fact if this is true. Thnx!
How we get fresh oxygen in window air conditioners? Since when we use window air conditioners the room is sealed totally from outside air and the same air in the room we breath again and again and no fresh oxygen entering the room possiblity is sealed and so how we get fresh oxygen in this condition. How living all the 24 hours in an air-conditioned room is harm full.
Is it safe to leave air conditioners running while on vacation? We will be leaving for vacation for 2 weeks. We have two window unit air conditioners. My partner wants to have them run on energysaver cycle while we're gone to keep the condo from heating up. I say that they should be off the entire time because a) it's a safety hazard and b) An Inconvenient Truth impacted my thought process. What do you think?
How are conventional air conditioners installed? Im doing an engineering report for my high school on conventional air conditioners. The problem is I can't find how they are installed through poorly organized HVAC websites and pdf files. So someone who works in the field could easily answer my question. Im doing an engineering report for my high school on exterior conventional air conditioners (like most of us have in the southern states). The problem is I can't find how they are installed through poorly organized HVAC websites and pdf files. So someone who works in the field could easily answer my question.
Portable Air Conditioners - Do they really work? We have a really small apartment (900 sq ft) and it faces south/west (maximum sun exposure). The building does not have air conditioning and the windows are not desigend to support standard window mounted air conditioners. We are nervous to buy a portable air conditioner. I read consumer reports and they gave portable air conditioners very poor ratings. Have you tried them and do they work? If you have had a positive experience, which one would you recommend?
How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? How do air conditioners work? Air conditioners were the air comes out the bottom? Do they make such air conditioners? I have one window, I plan to take it out and put in a air conditioner, but I need one that has the air blowing out from the bottom 'cause my window is quite high and there is a drop in the ceiling so a regular one would only blow air up into the ceiling and not into the room. Can anyone help me out?
Is it cheaper to run air conditioners then central air units? i have a 2700 sqft home 2 floors. Is it more efficient to have 5 air conditioners running?4 bedrooms 1 in the living room. Or is it more effeint to have central air installed? central air will probably be about 10-15k, would take a few years to make that money back.
Do air conditioners increase the outdoor temperature? Since traditional air conditioners bring cold air in and releases hot air out, wouldn't this mean that the outdoor temperatures would increase? And since many people have their air conditioners on at the same time, then the outdoor temperature increase would be pretty significant wouldn't you think, if the amount of heat gained outside is equal to the amount of heat reduced indoors?
Does anyone know how well the air conditioners at the Four Queens Hotel work? Stayed at the Sahara last year and had a great time but I found it hard to sleep because the air conditioners didn't get the room that cool. It was probably around 80 degrees in the room at night. We are planning to stay at the Four Queens this year and was wondering if anyone had stayed there recently and what they thought of the air conditioners. Thx
What's your opinion on portable air conditioners? I have been told by some people that portable air conditioners can be as efficient as in-window units, and they do just as good of a job. Others say that they cost almost twice as much to run, and barely cool the room that they are in. What's your opinion/experiences, let me know.
Do air conditioners work on plastic windows? i used to have wooden windows but now i have plastic windows and im just wondering if the air conditioners would still work on plastic windows since you cant drill holes into them.
Are there internal air conditioners? I was wondering if there are air coditioners made that can independently be placed inside an apartment (i.e. without mounting in the window or through wall). I know that usually heat is produced and that's why part of air conditioners are put outside, but our rented apartment doesn't allow for this. Thank you for your help.
Do all air conditioners need brackets? I have a year old air conditioner which when it was installed the company who installed it said it did not need the outside brackets because it is a slide out type and the casing is bolted to the window. But now housing says it needs a bracket but a few other people got the same letter so do all air conditioners need one or only certain types.
Do Ohio landlords have to provide air conditioners? I've gotten mixed answers on this - can anyone tell me if Ohio (Columbus specifically) requires a landlord to provide air conditioners? We were explicitly told they would be here, then they were all removed from the unit before we moved in and the owner denies that the person who showed us the apartment ever said that.
How to purify water that comes out from air conditioners? i just want to know perfectly domestic ways to purify or filter water that comes out from air conditioners (which is a big amount) in order to use it in drinking, washing, cleaning or even watering plants. i've read about filters, boiling, charcoal and even purifying tablets (wonder where to find them) so please help me with convenient and efficient steps and ways. Thanks
portable air conditioners how much does it cost to run them? Hi there , does anyone own one of those portable air conditioners on wheels, the ones with a hose attached to an open window? im only looking for the ones that cool only, how much do they cost to run here in Sydney per hour ? lets say for a 1000wt unit, thank you all .
Why do small air conditioners only work for an hour? I have a small window-mounted air conditioner. It blows ice cold air for about an hour. Then it doesn't blow quite as cold. After 2 hours the air is downright warm. If I turn it off and let it "rest" for a few hours, its back to normal. What causes that?
What size ducts do different types of air conditioners need? We currently have an evaporatative ducted air conditioner which has to be replaced, we were hoping to get a refrigerated reverse cycle unit instead but the air contioning mechanic told me that the ducting we have would not be suitable. Which ducting has the largest diameter, evoporative or refrigerated? I am worried about what the holes in our ceiling will look like if we do decide to change.
What is the best brand of furnaces and air conditioners? We are building a house and would like to know what is the better brand of furnace and air conditioner? Bryant, Train, ect. Also what should it cost to install heat and air in a 1800 sq foot new construction home. We have 1800 sq feet upstairs and a walk out basement (1800 sq ft) that will also need heat, no air. Any input would be helpful.
How do you install child window guards with window air conditioners? I'm trying to install an air conditioner in a window which also has to have child safety window guards. To start I'm properly installing the air conditioner with a good bracket, but the window is 48 inches wide (and the AC is 18 inches wide) so the rest of the window isn't guarded. It is a very shallow window, only about 3 inches from the start of the windowsill on the inside to the outside of the frame. Am I stuck with putting plywood in the rest of the window? I'd like to be able to take it out of the window for the winter. Thanks!
Do portable air conditioners use a lot of electricity? I have a portable air conditioner in my studio apartment. It works, but just barely. My electricity is included in my rent, so I don't know how much the electric bill is, but my landlord told me to keep the air conditioner off during the day when I am not home. But if I do that, when I get home, I can crank it all the way up, and my apartment doesn't get cool until about 2am. I thought about buying another one of the units, thinking maybe 2 won't have to work so hard to cool the place down as one does. I am just trying to find the most efficient way to stay cool. It's hot here in the desert this time of year!
Are all air conditioners LOUD? And I mean the FAN, not the compressor? It seems like every air conditioner I try is really really loud and it hurts my ears. The ones that say they're "quiet" are only referring to reducing rattle on the compressor and such, but the darned fan is still loud as anything! Are there any air conditioners out there that are TRULY quiet?? The first guy is right, I do have rather sensitive hearing. That's why I really need to find one with a quiet fan and such that can still cool my room (8000-10,000 BTU).
How do you keep the temperature in the aquarium down without buying air conditioners? I have a 125liter tank. I found its temperature rise recently and guessed it is something to do with the room temperature. I don't think the heater or the thermometer has a problem. I just wonder what if the temperature gets really high in the summer for example 30°C, the tank temperature might rise too! What could I do without buying an air conditioner???
Are there any dangers associated with sit-in window air conditioners? I'm going to go buy a second hand air conditioner and want to make sure there's no danger. I never grew up with them so I know nothing. The AC I'm getting is Maytag. Quick Googling brought me to recalls of Maytag ACs that have heating combined. Just want to make sure there is NO fire or not enough oxygen problem that could come up with an AC. Also what are the BTU units? Would a 6,000 BTU AC be sufficent for a medium sized bedroom?
Do people still use air conditioners in places where it's hot but dry? I've always wondered if people from areas (Phoenix, Baghdad, etc) where it's like 100+ in the summer and humidity is under 20% still use air conditioners. I live in the Northeast and I've never been to those hot and dry places so I wonder how it's like when it's hot but comfortable.
Is it true that High Efficiency furnaces/air conditioners run better with the cheaper air filters? Was told that the air filters with a lower MERV rating allow the furnace/air conditioner to get air more easily and makes them run more efficiently. Said the higher rated filters trap more pollutants (dust, animal dander, etc), but that cuts down on the amount of air which makes the furnace/air conditioner work harder (cost more to run). Trane Hi Efficiency Furnace(92%) and air conditioner (13 SEER)
Do portable air conditioners really work? I live in Sacramento, CA, where the temperature often reaches 95°+ in May, and continues to rise to upwards of 105° (and as high as 114°) until September. Would a portable air conditioner be appropriate for the climate here? Would it keep my dog and child cool enough in the summer months? A standard a/c will not fit in my window, so if I got one, my landlord would have to cut a hole in the wall to mount it, so when I moved out, I'd be forfeiting it!
do air conditioners need to be screwed into the window? The one we have comes with screws that my uncle installed for us, however, we moved to a different apartment a few months ago and if I put holes in anything here I'll have to pay for damages. Is it absolutley necessary to use the screws? WIll the air conditioner fall out of my window without them?
Ok to run 2 portable air conditioners at the same time? I have a portable air conditioner that came with my apartment. Unfortunately even if I left it on 24/7/365 on high, it couldn't keep up with the heat, it's just not big enough. I was thinking about getting another one, as well, but was wondering if that would be practical. Would 2 of those things running at the same time use too much electricity or blow the circuits?
Which compressor is more durable for Air conditioners? I am planning to buy ' General 'company's 1.5 ton window type of Air conditioner. There are 2 options for comrpessors, Rotary type & Techmisha (piston type). Is it okay to buy the one with Rotary compressor ? Thanks
